Cool little Netbook... July 16, 2010 SAUL ESPINOZA (El Paso, TX, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this Netbook almost a month ago... It works great, runs pretty fast, for a netbook, and working between programs flows real smoothly, the ONLY complain I got about it is the mouse button, it clicks a little too loud for my taste... Besides that I use this to view movies hear music and load my iPod, SKype and your other avg daily uses... Great bright screen the keyboard feels nice and it's just a good size to move around...

Hercules e-cafe EC-1000W The Good, The Bad (But Definitely NOT Ugly) June 18, 2010 John A. Hewes (Phoenix, AZ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This little netbook is a decent device. The SATA hard drive capacity of 250GB is significantly larger than any other netbook I looked at. The keyboard, although not as good as a desktop keyboard (of course due to size), it works well. The keyboard is difficult to use initially with large hands/fingers, and the right/left click keys are too narrow for a clean "click". The pressure required to depress a key is just right for me. It has a bit of snap to it, but not so hard that I skip characters.
The screen is small, but very functional. The colors are good and viewability is good also. It is difficult to read in direct sunlight, however. A glare filter might take care of that problem. I don't have one yet to try it.
The speakers are built-in and are adequate for general use, but are not very loud. Not a good choice for music lovers. Portable speakers should work well, however.
The machine has 3 USB 2.0 ports,a VGA connection for connecting to a monitor, an ethernet for LAN, in and out audio jacks (standard 3.5mm), and a jack for the power supply cord. The cord tends to get in my way, as the input jack is on the right hand side of the machine, an the male jack on the cord is "L" shaped. Turning the "L" to point towards the back of the machine does help to minimize the inconvenience. There are no ports on the backside of the netbook.
The processor is an Intel Atom N270, which has enough power for the applications I use. The machine comes with 1GB RAM, which definitely needs to be upgaded to the 2GB maximum. Built-in 802.11N Wi-Fi provides good reception at hot spots. I use a Wi-Max USB modem and the machine handles the increased speed with a little hesitation (which I attribute to only having 1GB RAM).
My version of the netbook came loaded with Windows 7 Starter Edition. This software is just an excuse for Microsoft to encourage upgrading. However the OS does what I need it to do just fine. Other versions have been released with a Linux OS. I have read that some users have used Windows XP, which definitely would use less resources and work better than Windows 7.
The machine comes with a webcam, which works adequately. The software has a few special effects that you can add to your mugshot. The built-in microphone seems to work fine.
I have no complaints about the battery life. It does last at least 6 hours, and there are power saving options to squeeze out a bit more. The battery does have a "trick" to putting it in and removing it. BE SURE to read the instructions. Otherwise it is easy to damage your machine. After reading the instructions, I had no problem installing the battery (which arrived partially charged).
The lid (screen) doesn't have a notch or handle to open it. It is stiff (which means it stays in the exact position you place it in, a plus for me). It is a bit difficult to open however, due to the lack of a notch or handle. It is a two handed operation.
There is one area in which I have encountered frustrating problems. The touch pad does not always work correctly. At times it seems to do what it wants, and will move the cursor somewhere else on the page, without even being touched. At times it is activated by a mere brush (will try to adjust sensitivity), and other times when tapping on the pad, nothing at all happens. Also, at times just barely touching the left click key will send the page into a rapid scroll, which only stops on its own. Trying to get back to the place I was at sometimes starts the process all over again. Also when moving the cursor, it will often create a directional window, which causes the cursor to jump, or a whole new page will open. The cursor also seems to wander at times. I will be typing and suddenly I'm typing in the middle of a previous paragraph. Extremely frustrating. I am going to buy a portable mouse as soon as possible, and stop using the touchpad.
Except the frustrating issues mentioned, I like the netbook and appreciate how well it is built, except for the lousy touchpad. (Hercules is built by a French corporation). I recommend it for its portability, 250GB HDD, functional keyboard, and good screen visibility. They need to dump the touchpad for a better version.
I would rate the machine a "4", but due to the lousy touchpad and low RAM, I have given it a "3"
Great product, great price! April 15, 2010 Marilyn (Southeastern Michigan, USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow! I really love this netbook. I had no problem using the instructions in the manual to install the battery and to perform the first time charge. The rest of the set up process was easy, also, as the operating system led me through the steps. I absolutely think this is the way to go when you need computing power "on the go", but not all the functionality of a full laptop computer. Its great for reading email, doing simple word processing, and, of course, talking to my grandchildren using the built-in web camera. The screen, for its size, is very clear, and I am considering purchasing an external DVD drive for it, so I, or my grandchildren, can watch videos, anywhere! I especially appreciate the "plug n play" USB ports, and the way the operating system recognizes new devices that have plugged in, without having to reboot the system. The 6-hour battery life has more than met my needs. And, the eCafe keeps dropping in price on Amazon, which makes it even more of an amazing deal. Seriously, if you have the extra cash, this netbook is a great buy.
When you need a little PC, but not a lot of PC March 18, 2010 Karen Woodworth Roman (DeKalb, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had the opportunity to try notebooks before and have been unhappy with the little screen, little keyboard, and "cheap" toy feel. However, when given the chance to review the eCafe, I jumped on it. I'm a Mac user, but sometimes need a PC for work. That's where this comes in really handy.
The main reason I've needed a PC was so that I could do some remote work which required a PC. I'm happy to report that this netbook works great for that. Recently, a friend needed to use his printer at my house and we made it work most easily by using this PC. I've taken this PC to a couple of trade shows and it was all I needed. It is smaller and a little lighter than my 13" macbook and I was able to slip it into a little messenger bag. I have not tried to use it for heavy computing...just emails and web surfing. But, as an FYI, it doesn't meet the specs for online games such as World of Warcraft.
I had a little trouble getting the battery in correctly, but after a couple of tries, it is now working fine. I think the blue design with the bamboo is cute and the keyboard is a little better than other netbooks that I've tried. The netbook is about 10.75 inches wide by 7.5 and the screen is about 8.75 by 5 inches which is 10" on the diagonal. I haven't tried this one out yet, but I've also found netbooks great to take as a computer to show a presentation on when you have to bring your own projector and laptop.
I'm giving this 5 stars, because I think it is a good netbook. I'm not giving it 5 stars as a full powered computer. So for when you need a little PC, but not a lot of PC, the eCafe may be the machine for you.
Netbook that works for me March 18, 2010 J. Ung 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
what i do with my notebook or netbook is this.
Internet surfing, watching youtube/hulu/news clips, listen to pandora/internet radio, and word processing.
My experience of surfing the web with this was great. It was fast and sponteneous. There were no lagging or crashing for over a month of usage. Web sites I visited were major news site, video sites, and some flash heavy sites.
Ability to watching YouTube and hulu on a netbook is huge, I think. Since many net books in the market are not capable of playing all the video I want to watch, I did not expect too much. However it was a wonderful experience to be able to watch those videos. Of course, it doesn't play hd clips very well, but it didn't bother me because it handled YouTube and hulu very well. After a while the bottom gets warm and the fan starts running just like any other netbook or notebook.
Listening to pandora or any other Internet radio was great as well. Pandora runs on heavy flash I think, yet it worked well with no problem.
Lastly, the word processing. I use google docs for occasional article writing and I noticed that it is not perfect tool yet. It hanged for a while for a certain command or task, but also found that reliability depends on the os and the browser. With this netbook I did not have much trouble and I used on the chrome.
My general yet very personal experience with this net book was good overall. It's a netbook so it's small and easy to carry around. The battery lasted long. However, there are couple of things I disliked. Opening the screen was not so easy because the hinge is too tight or because of its design. The viewing angle of the LCD screen was very narrow. The LCD has too much blueish tint by default, so I tried to calibrate (software) a couple of times, but returned to default setting when I reboot. I also found keyboard keys are somewhat small and speaker volume is little bit low.
After all, what matters is what I do with it, not what I have. And this netbook serves me well for what I do.
